Things seemed to be going wrong with the Spyder 550. One mechanic cut his finger on a hose ring. Another was taken to the hospital when one of the doors accidentally smashed his finger. All the while, the “King of Kustomizers” George Barris kept working, inscribing the words LITTLE BASTARD on the side of the vehicle.

There are many stories about why Dean chose this particular slogan. But Bracker is one of the few who knows the actual answer. “Porsches were beating the hell out of the bigger machinery on the sports-car tracks,” he explains.

The British Jag drivers with engines ten times the size, they looked down their noses at the Porsches. But when a good driver in a Porsche came along and beat them, they’d refer to us and our Porsches as the “Little Bastards.”

That’s the main reason why Jimmy put that on. As usual, he was giving someone the finger. It was the same mental attitude he had when Jack Warner didn’t want him racing, and he’d roar between the soundstages in his MG, just thumbing his nose at the boss. Jimmy made his presence known in the loudest way possible. So the “Little Bastard” was him just showing off his anti-authoritative side.
